Strengthening On-Site Response System for Heavy Snow and Cold Wave Preparedness
Yeongju City, Gyeongbuk Province (Mayor Park Nam-seo) will establish and implement a 'Comprehensive Winter Natural Disaster Countermeasure Plan' by March 15 next year.
Yeongju City has formed and is operating a Snowstorm and Cold Wave Countermeasure Team to protect vulnerable groups from heavy snow and cold waves and to prevent various natural disasters and safety accidents. Accordingly, the city is securing disaster management resources related to snow removal and strengthening on-site inspections of key facilities such as snow-vulnerable structures and roads.
The city operates a Disaster Safety Countermeasure Headquarters composed of 13 collaborative departments and related organizations to respond promptly to various disaster situations. In particular, when a heavy snow or cold wave weather advisory is issued, an emergency duty system will be activated according to the situation at each stage to take swift action.
In addition, to minimize damage to vulnerable groups caused by cold waves, the city plans to provide winter supplies and offer visit and phone services to check on the elderly during cold wave advisories through disaster helpers (including neighborhood leaders, life support workers, and voluntary disaster prevention members).
Jo Jong-geun, Director of the Safety and Disaster Division, said, “We are thoroughly preparing to prevent damage caused by snowfall and cold waves due to weather conditions,” and added, “We ask all citizens to familiarize themselves with the action guidelines for heavy snow and cold waves and to pay special attention to health management, prevention of water pipe freezing, fires, and other safety accidents.”
