Choi Tae-won, Chairman of SK Group, stated that talents in the era of artificial intelligence (AI) must "have the ability to identify what the problem is, allocate resources appropriately, and find methodologies."
On the 26th, Chairman Choi attended a discussion session at the '50th Anniversary Conference of the Korea Higher Education Foundation' held at Walkerhill Hotel in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, where he said, "Talent requires intelligence, not knowledge or wisdom," adding, "Intelligence is about solving problems collectively and adapting to a changing world. Whether a stable society is created depends on the presence of intelligence." He continued, "The late Chairman Choi Jong-hyun said that when handling tasks, one must be able to understand the 'three-dimensional location.' A person who can set the coordinates of where they stand, cooperate, and take responsibility can be called a talent."
The discussion session, themed 'Finding Humanity's Path in the Forest of Talent,' which debated the qualities and cultivation methods of talent, was chaired by Yeom Jae-ho, President of Taejae University. Panelists included Chairman Choi, who is also the Chairman of the Korea Higher Education Foundation, Lee Dae-yeol, Professor at Johns Hopkins University, and Lee Seok-jae, Professor at Seoul National University.
Chairman Choi predicted that AI will transform the entire system of our current society, including capitalism and democracy. He emphasized the need for talents who can maintain their own center while collaborating with people and AI amid unprecedented changes. He said, "In the AI era, many things will be newly designed. The spaces and times we have lived in will all be redesigned, and social systems will change." He added, "It is important how humans and AI can rapidly create future changes through cooperation and harmony."
Following the event, the foundation held a vision declaration ceremony for its 50th anniversary and explored its social role. The Korea Higher Education Foundation was established in 1974 by the late Chairman Choi Jong-hyun, father of Chairman Choi Tae-won, with the belief of "planting trees looking ten years ahead and nurturing talents looking a hundred years ahead."
Over the past 50 years, the foundation has supported over 5,000 scholarship students and produced 947 PhDs from world-renowned universities.
