Goyoungim, Gwangju Buk-gu Council Member, Proposes Ordinance
A legal basis has been established for residents to ride village buses for free on the anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising.
On the 26th, Go Young-im, a member of the Gwangju Buk-gu Council, announced that she had proposed the "Ordinance Amendment on Supporting the May 18 Democratic Uprising Commemoration Project in Buk-gu, Gwangju."
The ordinance includes provisions to support free rides on village buses on the "May 18 Democratic Uprising Commemoration Day."
Previously, Gwangju City operated public transportation such as city buses and subways free of charge for one day on the May 18 Democratic Uprising Commemoration Day, but village buses were excluded.
Councilor Go said, "Interest in the May 18 Democratic Uprising has surged following the Nobel Prize in Literature awarded to author Han Kang and the popularity of the novel Boy Goes to Heaven," adding, "We aim to enhance the symbolic significance of Buk-gu as a sacred place of democratization, which includes historic sites such as the National May 18 Democratic Cemetery, by extending free rides to village buses on the commemoration day."
The ordinance is scheduled to be reviewed by the Economic and Welfare Committee on the 27th and implemented following approval at the plenary session on the 29th.
