The Korea Post announced on the 27th that it will issue New Year's stamps (606,000 sheets), miniature sheets (280,000 sheets), New Year's cards, and postcards themed around the snake, a symbol of wisdom and change, to celebrate the Year of the Blue Snake (Eulsa Year, 乙巳年) in 2025, on the 2nd of next month.
The New Year's stamps feature images of a blue snake holding a flower and a snake shedding its skin and moving forward. The snake's body is printed with holograms to express the sparkling wishes for the New Year. The New Year's cards are designed to depict various forms of snakes while wishing for hope and happiness.
In East Asia, the snake has been respected as one of the twelve zodiac guardians protecting the land. The snake is regarded as an auspicious being, considered a guardian deity protecting homes and villages, and it is said that people have wished for immortality and fertility by seeing snakes. When a snake appears in a dream, it is also regarded as a good omen symbolizing wealth, luck, healing, and abundance.
The premium New Year's cards (4 types) are sold for 2,000 won each, the regular type (6 types) for 1,600 won each, and the New Year's postcards (2 types) for 1,000 won each.
Korea Post also offers customized New Year's cards made with designs requested by customers. The prices are 3,000 won for the premium type and 2,000 won for the regular type. The prices of New Year's cards and postcards include postage fees, so there is no need to purchase and affix stamps separately.
Commemorative stamps, New Year's stamps, premium New Year's cards, and New Year's postcards can be purchased by visiting post offices or through the Internet Post Office. However, the regular and customized New Year's cards are exclusive products of the Internet Post Office and can only be purchased online.
Cho Hae-geun, head of Korea Post, said, "In the Eulsa Year 2025, I hope all citizens welcome a healthy and prosperous New Year like the snake, a symbol of abundance and immortality."
