Myeong Hyun-gwan, Haenam County Governor, "Attracting an International School to Solar City Enterprise City"

Designation as Opportunity Development Zone... Positive Signal for Corporate Attraction
"Review of Establishing Educational Institutions to Create Residential Conditions" Ordered

Myung Hyun-kwan, the governor of Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, instructed the county office executives to actively consider attracting an international school to the Solar City Enterprise City.

According to the county on the 26th, Governor Myung said at the regular meeting held on the 25th, attended by heads of departments and township chiefs, “With the large-scale development project in full swing, the Solar City Enterprise City was designated as an Opportunity Development Zone in June, signaling a green light for attracting companies. I hope you actively consider attracting an international school to create synergy effects by facilitating population inflow and establishing stable living conditions due to company attraction.”

The Solar City Enterprise City, being developed as a self-sufficient city with a population of 36,600, is experiencing a groundbreaking turning point in attracting companies and population inflow through a 300 billion KRW public project and its designation as an Opportunity Development Zone focused on renewable energy and data centers.

In particular, with the amendment of the Special Act on Enterprise City Development in January allowing the establishment of elementary and secondary international schools within enterprise cities, Haenam-gun recognizes the necessity of establishing an international school to improve the educational environment and secure stable living conditions for the population residing in the enterprise city.

Accordingly, the county, Jeollanam-do, and project stakeholders are undergoing realistic discussions through multifaceted cooperation to secure feasibility for establishing an international school and to devise investment attraction plans necessary for its establishment. While there is consensus on the need to attract educational institutions for the revitalization of the enterprise city, explanations regarding the county’s financial investment burden are being provided, and active discussions are underway to minimize the county’s financial burden and ensure benefits return to local residents.

Governor Myung emphasized, “The Solar City Enterprise City is being developed as a dream city with global competitiveness. As the ongoing projects get on track, the need for educational institutions is expected to increase. I hope you thoroughly review issues such as fairness with the local education community regarding the attraction of an international school, ways to minimize the county’s financial burden from its establishment, and economic effects, and derive measures that can form a consensus among local residents.”

Meanwhile, at the regular meeting that day, a 'Haenam-gun Environmental Plan Establishment Service Interim Report Meeting' was also held to predict long-term prospects due to large-scale development and population inflow in the Solar City Enterprise City and to establish plans accordingly.
