Discussion on Safety Measures and Current Issues for Winter Natural Disasters such as Cold Waves and Fires

Continuous Inspection of Vulnerable Areas and Equipment Management to Ensure Safety

Busan Transportation Corporation (President Lee Byung-jin) announced on the 26th that it held a "Winter Disaster Preparedness Safety Inspection Meeting" to finalize winter urban railway safety management measures, ensuring that citizens using the urban railway can have a safe winter.

The meeting, held on the 25th at the headquarters' disaster situation room and presided over by the president, was attended by all department heads. They shared safety measures in various fields including △winter weather forecasts △management plans for disaster risk factors △urban railway operation plans in case of disasters, and established a proactive response system by checking procedures for responding to facility fires.

As winter climate variability is expected to be high due to abnormal weather patterns, to enhance responsiveness to sudden weather changes, mock drills such as emergency mobilization for cold waves and snow damage preparedness, and snow removal operations on tracks and trains were conducted from the 15th of last month to the 14th of this month.

Inspections are also conducted by type of natural disaster. To prevent facility freezing damage caused by cold, the management status of snow removal equipment was confirmed to be normal, and △water supply and various exposed pipes insulation materials inside stations △heaters in aboveground station restrooms were inspected. Trains are also managed daily through inspections of pantographs and heating systems.

Active measures are taken against fires caused by dry weather. Heating facilities inside stations and leased stores, as well as hazardous materials that could cause fires such as fallen leaves and waste in stations and elevated sections, were inspected, and the management status of firefighting equipment such as fire extinguishers was checked. The corporation plans to re-inspect all firefighting facilities including fire alarm systems, sprinklers, indoor fire hydrants, and emergency guide lights again in December.

In preparation for an increase in urban railway passengers during heavy snowfall, a plan was made to increase train operations by up to 80 runs per day and deploy up to 180 support personnel at stations. Safety measures against heavy snowfall will also be implemented, such as placing snow removal agents and equipment near station entrances and other locations vulnerable to snow accumulation and icing.

Lee Byung-jin, president of Busan Transportation Corporation, said, "As winter climate variability is expected to be high this year, we will do our best to ensure that citizens using the urban railway can use it with peace of mind through proactive, field-centered responses."
