Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) signed a business agreement with Seongdong-gu Public Library on November 21 to revitalize the operation of the specialized library for people with developmental disabilities, 'Seongdong-gu Wagle Wagle Library.'
Through this agreement, the district plans to support people with developmental disabilities to participate in various educational and cultural activities and create an environment where both people with developmental disabilities and non-disabled individuals can freely use the library.
'Wagle Wagle Library' opened in 2023 as a space to alleviate the inconveniences faced by people with developmental disabilities and slow learners when using the library. It is equipped with about 600 books, including artificial, tactile, and sound books composed of short sentences or easy language tailored to the level of the target users such as people with developmental disabilities, educational books for non-disabled individuals, and general books.
Additionally, the floor is heated with ondol, allowing free activities without worrying about noise or movement, and psychological stabilization vests that enhance psychological comfort have been provided, increasing satisfaction among library users and their guardians.
Through the agreement with Seongdong-gu Public Library, 'Wagle Wagle Library' aims to improve cultural accessibility for the information-vulnerable group of people with developmental disabilities and develop and operate various programs for people with developmental disabilities and slow learners.
Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, "Through this agreement, I hope that opportunities for people with developmental disabilities and slow learners to participate in more diverse cultural activities will expand," and added, "We will continue to strive so that all residents can enjoy a rich culture without exclusion or discrimination."
