Causing Two Intentional Accidents... Fraudulent Claim of 4 Million Won
Suspects who deliberately caused car accidents by rear-ending vehicles and claimed insurance money have been handed over to the prosecution.
According to the Financial Supervisory Service and Suseo Police Station on the 25th, three suspects were sent to the prosecution last month on charges of causing two intentional accidents through automobile insurance fraud advertisements and embezzling about 4 million won. Since the enforcement of the 'Special Act on the Prevention of Insurance Fraud' in August, the Financial Supervisory Service and the insurance sector have conducted investigations on about 400 people and requested investigations for about 380 people deemed suspicious.
The suspects posted messages titled "Looking for attackers in OO (region name)" on Daum Cafe to recruit conspirators for intentional accidents. Later, through messengers, they facilitated and enticed automobile insurance fraud with messages such as "The insurance company we recently worked with is tough, which insurance company is it?", "Can we hit the front instead of the rear?", and "So far, all three jobs were completed neatly in one day and the money was deposited."
Earlier, the Financial Supervisory Service and the insurance sector have been intensively monitoring about 10 internet sites or mobile applications where insurance fraud solicitation activities frequently occur since early this year. In particular, major non-life insurers such as Samsung, Hyundai, DB, KB, and Meritz monitor posts 24 hours a day. As a result, the number of insurance fraud advertisement posts, which used to be several hundred per month online, has recently decreased to less than about 10 per month.
A Financial Supervisory Service official said, "Insurance fraud is a representative financial crime that undermines the foundation of the insurance system and causes premium increases for many insurance contracts," and added, "If insurance fraud solicitation, enticement, encouragement, or advertising activities are suspected on internet sites, please immediately report to the Financial Supervisory Service or insurance companies with evidence such as call recordings and message contents between the parties involved."
