Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 25th that it has signed a shipbuilding contract worth a total of 1.0985 trillion KRW for four 16,000 TEU (1 TEU equals a 6-meter container) class container ships with shipowners in the Asia region. These vessels are scheduled to be delivered to the shipowners by December 2027.
Including this contract, Samsung Heavy Industries has secured orders for a total of 33 vessels (approximately 6.8 billion USD), mainly LNG (liquefied natural gas) carriers, as well as ammonia carriers and various other ship types, achieving 70% of this year’s target of 9.7 billion USD. By ship type, the orders include 22 LNG carriers, 2 ultra-large ammonia carriers, 1 shuttle tanker, 4 S-MAX oil tankers, and 4 container ships, totaling 33 vessels.
The global container ship market is expected to see increased demand for replacing aging vessels due to strengthened environmental regulations. According to a recent forecast by Clarkson Research, approximately 53 container ships of 12,000 TEU or larger are expected to be ordered annually from this year through 2027.
A Samsung Heavy Industries official stated, "We will do our best to achieve our order targets, focusing on LNG carriers with steady orders, FLNG with overwhelming competitiveness, and eco-friendly vessels."
