Celebration Party for Release Held in Front of Victim's House Murdered 20 Years Ago
Red Carpet Laid and Fireworks Set Off
A murderer in China has sparked public outrage by holding a feast in front of the victim's house after being released from prison.
On the 24th (local time), according to the Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) and others, Mr. A, who served 20 years for murder, held a feast with his family in a village in Qingyi Town, Mianyang City, Sichuan Province, China. Fireworks were loudly set off at the party, and a red carpet was also laid out.
The problem was that the feast took place in front of the house of the victim who was murdered 20 years ago. Upon hearing the news of the feast, the victim's son, Xiang, hurried back to his hometown from out of town. Mr. A was arrested on charges of killing Xiang's father in the family bedroom when Xiang was 15 years old. At that time, Xiang's father was 39 years old. Mr. A conspired with three others to commit the murder, and they poured gasoline on the victim's body and set it on fire after the killing to destroy evidence.
At the time a student, Xiang was unable to see his father's remains due to his family's concerns about trauma, and even after the incident, he was reportedly threatened and monitored by the perpetrators. According to Xiang, of the four people involved in the murder case, two were already sentenced to death and executed. The remaining two had their sentences reduced from death to life imprisonment, and then further reduced to 20 years, after which they were released. Mr. A also served his sentence as a model prisoner and was released after completing his term.
The murderer is causing controversy by hosting a lavish banquet in front of the victim's house. The photo shows fireworks being set off during the banquet. Weibo
This story became known after Xiang posted related videos on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok. Xiang said, "If given the chance, I want to talk to Mr. A. I don't want to get angry, but I want to ask why he made the choice that caused our family so much pain. However, on the day of his release, I was met with his blatant provocation and unimaginable malice," he lamented.
The bereaved family requested that the event be stopped, but the feast held by Mr. A reportedly continued until local police and government authorities intervened. However, both sides later expressed through local media that they wished to avoid further conflict.
Local netizens who learned of the story criticized Mr. A's actions. They responded with comments such as, "What is the point of a 20-year sentence? The sentence reduction was clearly a mistake," "Murderers like this should never be released," and "Why were there so many people at the banquet? What were they thinking?"
