Got 4 More This Year... HJ Jungongup Repeats Construction of 4 Eco-Friendly Ships of the Same Class

Order Received for 8 Eco-Friendly 7900TEU-Class Container Ships

HJ Heavy Industries (CEO Yu Sang-cheol) secured a total of eight orders this year by recently winning a contract for four 7,900 TEU eco-friendly container ships, following a similar order in June.

On the 25th, HJ Heavy Industries announced that it had signed a construction contract for four eco-friendly container ships worth a total of 606.7 billion KRW with a European shipowner.

This contract involves four 7,900 TEU eco-friendly container ships with a similar hull design to those ordered from another European shipowner in June, resulting in increased productivity and profitability through repetitive construction.

The vessels ordered by HJ Heavy Industries are 272 meters long, 42.8 meters wide, and have a cruising speed of 22 knots. They are 7,900 TEU container carriers reflecting state-of-the-art specifications and eco-friendly designs. The total contract value for the eight 7,900 TEU container ships ordered by the company this year amounts to approximately 1.2 trillion KRW.

Recently, container ship orders have increased due to rising container shipping rates and market share competition among global shipping companies, leading to a trend of rising ship prices.

According to Clarkson Research, a UK-based shipbuilding and shipping market analysis firm, container ship prices have risen by more than 30% over the past two years. Additionally, steady replacement demand for aging vessels has driven popularity for eco-friendly ship orders.

HJ Heavy Industries proudly stated that its world-class technology in the eco-friendly container ship sector was a key factor behind the orders. The company is focusing on securing next-generation eco-friendly shipbuilding technology, having succeeded in developing LNG dual-fuel container ships and carbon capture and storage container ships.

The container ships recently ordered by HJ Heavy Industries are equipped with eco-friendly facilities and designed with a "twin island" structure to maximize fuel efficiency and container capacity. The twin island design separates the accommodation area and engine room, relocating the accommodation to the center of the hull.

To meet the International Maritime Organization (IMO) sulfur oxide (SOx) emission standards, these eco-friendly vessels will be equipped with scrubbers for desulfurization and constructed as methanol-ready ships to enable future carbon-neutral operations.

An HJ Heavy Industries official said, "This contract was achieved by aligning our container shipbuilding capabilities and eco-friendly technologies with the shipowner's demands. We will repay the trust of the shipowner by delivering the best vessels on schedule."

The container ships ordered by HJ Heavy Industries will be built at the Busan Yeongdo Shipyard and are scheduled for sequential delivery starting in 2026.
