Partial Suspension of Production at Factory 1
1,000 Employees to be Laid Off or Relocated
Nissan Motor is expected to reduce production in Thailand and cut or relocate about 1,000 jobs. Recently, Japanese companies, once the 'mainstays' of the Southeast Asian automobile market, have been pushed onto the defensive by the onslaught of Chinese-made electric vehicles.
According to Kyodo News and other foreign media on the 22nd (local time), Nissan plans to partially halt production at one of its two plants in Thailand and consolidate operations into the second plant by September next year.
As a result, about 1,000 jobs, including those at Plant 1, are expected to be eliminated or relocated.
Citing industry sources, Kyodo News reported that approximately 1,000 Nissan employees in Thailand are expected to be laid off or transferred to other facilities by next fall.
In response, a Nissan spokesperson stated, "Plant 1 will continue to operate as a major production facility in Thailand," adding that some consolidation of the two plants is underway for equipment upgrades and that no plant will be closed. However, the spokesperson declined to comment on job cuts.
