This drill was prepared as part of the response to the increasing threats of biological terrorism, such as the suspected biological terrorism mail incident from Taiwan in July last year and the release of contaminated balloons by North Korea.
Biological terrorism refers to acts using viruses, bacteria, fungi, toxins, etc., to cause disease or death to humans, animals, or plants. Since a small amount of these substances can cause mass casualties, initial response is extremely important.
In this drill, the Paju Police Station and Paju Fire Station, which must respond jointly in the event of biological terrorism, also participated, and education on the roles of each agency and response procedures was conducted.
Additionally, education and practice were combined, including donning and doffing of personal protective equipment (Level A, C) and the use of multi-toxin detection kits, aiming to improve the on-site response capabilities of initial biological terrorism responders.
Lee Hansang, director of Paju Public Health Center, said, “We expect this biological terrorism response drill to be an opportunity to understand and cooperate on the roles of each agency such as the police and fire stations, and we will do our best to protect citizens in the event of biological terrorism.”
