Donald Trump, the President-elect of the United States, has nominated Pam Bondi, former Attorney General of Florida, as the Attorney General for his second administration, replacing Matt Gaetz, who withdrew his nomination.
On the 21st (local time), President-elect Trump stated, "I am proud to announce Pam Bondi, former Attorney General of Florida, as the next Attorney General. Pam has served as a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, rigorously prosecuting violent criminals and working to create safe streets for Florida families."
He added, "Pam was Florida's first female Attorney General and has worked to stop deadly drug trafficking and end the tragedy of fentanyl overdoses that have destroyed many families across the United States. Pam is a smart and tough Attorney General who will do an excellent job as a 'America First' fighter."
Bondi, originally from Florida, served on Trump's legal defense team during his impeachment trial in 2020. She also publicly supported Trump in the 2016 presidential election and participated in lawsuits challenging the constitutionality of Obamacare.
Previously nominated as Attorney General for Trump's second administration, former Congressman Matt Gaetz resigned after facing controversies involving the solicitation of minors and drug abuse, amid expectations that Senate confirmation would be difficult. This marks the first withdrawal following Trump’s election victory.
