Seongdong-gu Launches Campaign to Combat Aggressive Mosquitoes in Winter

From November to March next year, intensive winter mosquito control targeting 941 sites including small houses and mixed-use buildings... Eliminating 500-700 adult mosquitoes per larva, operating mosquito habitat reporting centers, and providing larvicide support

Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) announced that it will begin full-scale winter mosquito control operations to eliminate winter mosquitoes and larvae inhabiting building septic tanks and underground spaces due to climate warming.

Recently, factors such as climate change and improved heating conditions have caused mosquitoes to appear even in winter, causing inconvenience to residents.

Accordingly, since November, the district has deployed three pest control teams to carry out larval control work at 941 locations, including row houses, multi-family houses, and complex buildings.

The winter mosquito control will be implemented until March next year. Larvicides, which kill mosquito larvae, are applied to places where water accumulates, such as septic tanks and sumps, to eliminate larvae before they develop into adult mosquitoes.

This is an efficient control method that can fundamentally prevent mosquito outbreaks at a low cost, achieving a control effect of 500 to 700 adult mosquitoes per one mosquito larva.

In particular, since mosquitoes inhabit limited spaces during winter, effective control is possible, and it is expected to reduce the mosquito population in spring through this effort.

The district also operates a mosquito habitat reporting center. Pest control activities, including adult mosquito control and larvicide application, are conducted mainly in areas with many reports and complaints from residents, and larvicidal agents are provided when necessary.

Additionally, official letters requesting cooperation were sent to disinfection businesses and facilities subject to disinfection obligations to inform them about the necessity of winter mosquito control and larvicide application, urging active participation.

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “We hope that the focused winter mosquito control activities will allow residents to enjoy a healthy and comfortable daily life, and we will continue to make meticulous efforts to minimize residents’ inconvenience.”
