Comedian Yu Sang-mu (44), who announced his complete recovery after being diagnosed with colon cancer, has revealed that he suffered from symptoms of sun allergy.
On the 16th, Yu Sang-mu posted a video on his social media account with the caption "I'm in Hanoi but I'm sick." In the video, red marks that looked like wounds were visible on his face and the back of his neck. Looking haggard, Yu explained, "My face is badly damaged," adding, "This is due to a sun allergy." While traveling in Hanoi, Vietnam, prolonged exposure to sunlight caused skin troubles. His wife Kim Yeon-ji showed tears when she greeted him at the airport, saying, "What happened to your face?"
Netizens who saw the video expressed their concern with comments such as "What happened?" "I thought it was makeup," "If the allergy symptoms are this severe, he should see a doctor," and "Hope you recover quickly." In response to the ongoing worries, Yu Sang-mu posted two days later, "I am very sorry, my face is in a terrible state," and reassured, "I went to the hospital and am gradually getting better, so please don’t worry."
The sun allergy Yu Sang-mu experienced refers to a condition where symptoms such as itching or rash appear on the skin after exposure to sunlight. Reactions vary from person to person and can include redness, painful itching, and bleeding. The most common form is polymorphic light eruption, which causes blisters or vesicles on sun-exposed skin. Although the exact cause of sun allergy is unclear, sunlight is the primary factor, and genetic components are also believed to play a role. In severe cases, treatment typically involves applying steroid ointments or taking antihistamines, similar to other allergies, to improve the condition.
Meanwhile, Yu Sang-mu debuted in 2004 as a comedian through KBS’s 19th public recruitment and was active in segments such as "Bongsunga School," "Sang-guya Sang-guya," "Bitter Life," and "Grandma is Angry" on "Gag Concert." After being diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2017, he underwent surgery and chemotherapy and was declared fully recovered in 2022. During his battle with cancer, he married composer Kim Yeon-ji, who is six years his junior, in 2018.
