IEL Science "Advancing Commercialization Through New Solid-State Battery Technology for Space Applications"

IL Science announced on the 20th that the technology for implementing small solid-state batteries for space applications will be commercialized soon through a "3-dimensional (3D) current collector-based new technology for large-capacity solid-state battery manufacturing."

In August this year, performance tests of the space-use solid-state battery developed by IL Science showed normal operation within a temperature range from minus 20℃ to 120℃. It maintained stability even in a high vacuum environment below 0.66 pascal (Pa), successfully realizing a small solid-state battery capable of stable operation in extreme conditions.


Space-use batteries require differentiated performance to operate reliably in harsh space environments, including a wide temperature range, stability in ultra-high vacuum, and resistance to radiation exposure.


IL Science has already secured a key patent related to solid-state batteries transferred from Gachon University (“Cathode substrate, high-capacity solid-state battery and manufacturing method thereof,” US Patent No. 14/906,262) and plans to increase capacity by utilizing functional 3D current collectors developed at its existing battery research and development (R&D) center.


This patent, granted last month, covers selective surface treatment-based current collectors, lithium anodes, and manufacturing methods for solid-state batteries aimed at improving battery performance.


A company representative stated, “We are continuing R&D based on the patents we hold in collaboration with Professor Youngsoo Yoon’s team at Gachon University to commercialize solid-state batteries for future space industries. Through differentiated R&D and new technologies, we aim to accelerate the commercialization of space-use solid-state batteries and quickly capture the space battery market.”
