The Japanese government is reportedly planning to send a prime minister's aide to the United States to establish contact with the incoming administration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, Kyodo News reported on the 19th.
According to the report, Nagashima Akihisa, a security advisor to Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru, is scheduled to visit Washington D.C. from the 20th to the 24th to arrange meetings with key security personnel from the Trump camp.
Kyodo News also stated that he appears to be working on plans to hold a U.S.-Japan summit at an early date following Trump’s inauguration in January next year.
Previously, Prime Minister Ishiba had attempted to arrange an early meeting with President-elect Trump, but it did not materialize.
After his South America tour, Ishiba tried to meet with Trump on his way back to Japan, but the Trump team conveyed that a meeting before the inauguration would be difficult.
Nagashima also plans to meet with security officials from the Joe Biden administration and members of the National Diet to exchange a wide range of views.
