Sentenced to 24 Years in Prison for Killing Grandfather Over Domestic Violence Complaints by a Man in His 20s

Prosecution: "High Risk of Recidivism"
Hwang: "Lost Control After Drinking"

The prosecution has demanded a 24-year prison sentence for a man in his 20s who, after harboring resentment over domestic violence by his grandfather in his 70s, ultimately killed him with a weapon.

On the 19th, at the Seoul Eastern District Court Criminal Division 12 (Presiding Judge Lee Jeong-hyeong), during the sentencing hearing of Hwang Mo (23), the prosecution requested a sentence of 24 years in prison along with 20 years of electronic monitoring.

The prosecution stated, "We checked the victim's (grandfather's) history of domestic violence but found no cases that resulted in criminal punishment," and explained the reason for seeking a heavy sentence by saying, "The defendant committed the crime while intoxicated and poses a high risk of reoffending."

Hwang’s defense attorney argued, "The victim had a violent disposition and had been abusive toward the grandmother," adding, "The absence of a criminal record is because the cases were always resolved through agreements without requesting punishment."

In his final statement, Hwang said, "I had no intention of committing a crime on the day of the incident," and added, "I will live my life apologizing to my grandfather, who passed away tragically due to my loss of control after drinking."

Hwang was brought to trial on charges of stabbing his grandfather in his 70s multiple times with a weapon at a residence in Geumho-dong, Seongdong-gu, around 12:30 a.m. on August 6.

It was investigated that Hwang, who had harbored resentment since childhood because his grandfather abused him and tormented his grandmother, committed the crime in a state of intoxication, unable to control his anger on the day of the incident.
