"Trying to Return a Misdelivered Package to Its Owner"... A New Type of Fraud That Even Profilers Find Shocking

"Hacker-Collected Personal Information Used in All Crimes"
"Personal Information Must Not Be Disclosed Under Any Circumstances"

As fraud crimes including voice phishing continue unabated, a former profiler has urged caution regarding new phishing methods.

Recently, a video titled "Recent Crime Patterns That Even Profilers Are Surprised By" was uploaded on the YouTube channel 'Jisik Inside'. The video features Kwon Il-yong, Korea's first profiler and an adjunct professor at Dongguk University Graduate School of Police and Judicial Studies.

Professor Kwon said, "When people think of personal information, many only consider names, resident registration numbers, and addresses, but in fact, everything about me is personal information," adding, "Preferences, hobbies, and places I frequently visit are also included in personal information." When the host asked, "Don't people usually post those kinds of things on SNS?" Professor Kwon replied, "That's why it is necessary to limit the public scope of SNS as much as possible."

He pointed out, "In foreign countries, the use of mobile phones by teenagers is restricted," and added, "The social costs and damages caused by crimes are so significant that laws are being proposed. Although there may be cultural differences in our country, I think this issue should be discussed."

When asked, "How are the personal information collected by hackers used?" Professor Kwon emphasized, "They are used in all crimes. Voice phishing, smishing, child sexual exploitation through grooming, illegal gambling site operations?these crimes all apply."

Then, Professor Kwon introduced new phishing methods. He said, "The methods of leaking personal information are really cunning," and began, "They simply leave a box in front of someone’s house as if it were a delivery." Usually, when people find a delivery box they did not order in front of their house, they call the phone number labeled as the 'recipient' on the box. The number they call is actually the perpetrator's number.

If the victim says, "The delivery came to the wrong place," the perpetrator responds, "I will come to pick it up," and naturally asks for the address and name, thus committing the crime. Ultimately, the victim ends up revealing their apartment number and name themselves.

Professor Kwon said, "Psychopaths manipulate people in an instant," adding, "They quickly make the person’s judgment their own. That is why there are many psychopaths in economic and fraud crimes." He emphasized, "(Phishing) methods cannot all be memorized, so in any case, you must close your mouth the moment you are about to reveal your information yourself."
