Lee Jae-myung's Fifth Indictment... Democratic Party Calls It "Political Rival Elimination"

Pro-Administration Organization Innovation Meeting Mentions Resignation of Yoon Seok-yeol Administration

The Democratic Party reacted strongly to the fifth indictment of Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea. The prosecution's indictment was labeled as "eliminating political rivals," and it is expected that the party will respond forcefully to the Yoon Seok-yeol administration and the prosecution.

On the 19th, Cho Seung-rae, chief spokesperson of the Democratic Party, said at a briefing at the National Assembly Communication Office in Yeouido, Seoul, "This is too much," adding, "They have once again created a pretext to eliminate the president's political rival. Today's prosecution is an indictment for the sake of indictment." He also emphasized, "It is a clear forced indictment and oppression of the opposition party, aiming to imprison the leader of the main opposition party who enjoys overwhelming public support and to tie his hands and feet."

Chief spokesperson Cho strongly criticized the prosecution and President Yoon Seok-yeol. He claimed that unlike Lee Jae-myung, investigations into Kim Keon-hee and others are being overlooked. Cho said, "No matter how much they tighten the noose around Lee, they cannot cover up Kim's state affairs manipulation or the failures of the Yoon administration," adding, "The prosecution, which becomes infinitely small in front of President Yoon and his wife, is obsessed only with killing the opposition party and Lee, which is laughable."

The pro-Lee Jae-myung organization, the Democratic Innovation Council (Innovation Council), mentioned President Yoon's resignation. In a statement released that day, the Innovation Council said, "The Yoon administration is using the prosecution like hunting dogs to focus on purging political rivals," and "Now the Democratic Party must act. We must not ignore the people's anger and must stand at the forefront to stop the dictatorial rampage of the Yoon administration." They continued, "This fight is a historic struggle to protect democracy," and "The Democratic Party must take the lead in the struggle for the resignation of the Yoon administration."

Chief spokesperson Cho also stated, "The prosecution must prepare for judgment by the people and history," and "The Democratic Party will fight to the end with the determination to form a last stand against the prosecution dictatorship that destroys democracy."

The Suwon District Prosecutors' Office Public Investigation Division (Chief Heo Hoon) indicted Lee Jae-myung, former Secretary to the Governor of Gyeonggi Province A, and former Gyeonggi Province special government employee Bae, among others, without detention on charges of breach of trust in the course of duty. Lee is accused of using 106.53 million won of Gyeonggi Province's budget for personal use, including sandwiches, fruit, and meal expenses, from July 2018 to October 2021 during his tenure as governor of Gyeonggi Province. In addition to the breach of trust charge, Lee is also facing trials related to violations of the Public Official Election Act, perjury inducement, suspicions involving Daejang-dong, Baekhyeon-dong, Wirye New Town, Seongnam FC, and allegations of illegal North Korean remittances related to Ssangbangwool.
