Global telecommunications equipment company Ericsson LG held a press briefing on the 19th at the JW Marriott Hotel Seoul in Seocho-gu, Seoul, where it unveiled its recently published "Consumer Lab Report."

Ericsson LG selects 16 countries worldwide each year where mobile communication services are actively used and conducts in-depth surveys of users aged 15 to 69.

This year’s notable feature was that generative AI applications are gaining attention among 5G smartphone users worldwide. In particular, there was a high interest in "differentiated connectivity," which guarantees uninterrupted, high-quality connectivity at the most needed moments.

Additionally, 25% of generative AI users demanded stable networks, and 35% expressed willingness to pay extra for stable network connectivity.

Park Byung-sung, Technical Director who presented the findings, explained, "While previous apps focused on download transmission speeds, generative AI apps send users’ voice and image data to AI servers, so they are greatly affected by upload speeds."

He added, "If combined with extended reality (XR) devices in the future, it is expected to generate even more traffic demand, so preparation from the network performance perspective is necessary."

However, according to Ericsson LG’s survey of the Korean market, only about 15% of respondents said they were "very satisfied" with 5G network performance, which is lower than the global average.

Furthermore, about 15-18% of users reported experiencing inconvenience due to insufficient 5G connectivity or slower speeds in multi-use facilities, public transportation, and underground areas.

In a situation where technological evolution such as generative AI is taking place, if communication networks fail to support it, user satisfaction will decline. On the other hand, this trend can be interpreted as an opportunity for global telecom operators to meet related demand through customized connectivity experiences.

Director Park said, "Telecom operators are considering what services to find revenue models in and how efficiently to operate networks through AI automation and other means."

On this day, Ericsson LG demonstrated its various technologies and stated that they expect ▲network performance improvement ▲enhanced user experience ▲growth in telecom operator revenue and operational efficiency.

Ericsson LG introduced a method to build a "high-performance programmable network" that saves energy and reduces costs based on AI.

They explained that this technology ▲makes decisions through real-time data analysis ▲autonomously performs functions according to telecom operators’ objectives ▲and supports customized functions according to various services.

Meanwhile, Ericsson LG held the "Imagine Live Korea 2024" event, providing industry insights and networking opportunities for telecom operators and corporate clients.
