Daejeon 3.8 Democracy Movement Memorial Hall Opens... Expected to Become a Hub for Democracy Education Exterior view of the March 8 Democratic Uprising Memorial / Daejeon City

The 3.8 Democracy Movement Memorial Hall opened on the 19th in Seonhwa-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon.

The 3.8 Democracy Movement refers to the democratization protests that began in Daejeon on March 8, 1960, led by high school students. It symbolizes the courage and sacrifice of students who stood up against corruption and injustice at the time, fighting for democracy.

The project to build the memorial hall began after the 3.8 Democracy Movement Day was designated as a national commemorative day by the government in November 2018, and the construction was promised at the government-led ceremony held the following year.

A total of 18.29 billion won, including 6.35 billion won in national funds, was invested. Construction started in 2022 and was completed in June 2024.

To mark its opening, the memorial hall is holding a special exhibition on the 3.8 Democracy Movement. Until December 31, visitors can view vivid photographs of the historical events and award-winning works from the student writing contest hosted by the memorial association on the first floor.

The memorial hall plans to serve as a venue for democratic education. Various programs will allow students and young people to experience historical moments, learn about democracy and human rights, and reflect on their significance.

Lee Jangwoo, Mayor of Daejeon, said, "The opening of the 3.8 Democracy Movement Memorial Hall will be more than just an exhibition space; it will be a place to honor and pass on the historical records and spirit of the 3.8 Democracy Movement. I hope this will become an opportunity to raise understanding and interest in democracy."
