Songpa-gu, Organizing Spider Web Overhead Cables

KEPCO and 7 Telecom Companies Collaborate to Maintain 2,040 Utility Poles, 900 Telecom Poles, and 77km of Lines
Completed Repair of 288 Defective Aerial Cables in Residential Areas...Improving Urban Aesthetics and Enhancing Pedestrian Safety

Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced that it has completed the maintenance project for defective aerial cables in the area over eight months starting from March this year.

This aerial cable maintenance project involved a total budget of 3.4 billion KRW, including 700 million KRW secured by the district after being recognized for its achievements in the ‘Aerial Cable Maintenance Local Government Evaluation’ hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT earlier this year.

Previously, the district analyzed areas with numerous complaints related to defective aerial lines and selected four residential areas through a demand and status survey for aerial cable maintenance: Jamsilbon-dong residential area, Seokchon-dong residential area, Garak-dong residential area, and Macheon-dong residential area.

From March to October, defective aerial cables at 288 points, including tangled or sagging electric wires, communication lines, and abandoned lines in the four targeted residential areas, were thoroughly maintained. The maintenance scale included 2,040 utility poles, 900 communication poles, totaling 77 km.

In particular, this year the district was selected for the ‘Aerial Line Maintenance Procedure Improvement Pilot Project’ and cooperated with Korea Electric Power Corporation, KT, LGU+, and SKT telecommunication companies to conduct meticulous on-site maintenance. By improving the existing maintenance procedures, the maintenance sites were directly inspected during the start and completion of construction, and regular joint inspections were conducted together with eight telecommunication operators including the Seoul Radio Management Office.

On October 30, a joint inspection was conducted targeting the residential areas of Garak-dong and Macheon-dong, with participation from Songpa-gu, the Ministry of Science and ICT headquarters, the Seoul Radio Management Office, and the Aerial Cable Maintenance Support Center (KTOA).

The district plans to continue promoting aerial cable maintenance projects through ongoing monitoring. Currently, applications for the 2025 aerial cable maintenance demand survey are being accepted through each neighborhood community service center.

Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, stated, “Through this aerial cable maintenance, the residential areas with dense housing and aging shops have been improved to be more pleasant and safe. Above all, I thank the residents for their understanding and cooperation,” and added, “We will continue to actively discover and promote aerial cable maintenance sites to create a safe and livable Songpa.”
