President Yoon Suk-yeol, who is visiting Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to attend the Group of Twenty (G20) summit, met on the 18th (local time) with leaders of MIKTA (Mexico, Indonesia, Korea, T?rkiye, Australia), a consultative group of middle powers across regions, to share a commitment to democracy and support for multilateralism.
Attending the meeting alongside President Yoon were Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, President of Mexico; Prabowo Subianto, President of Indonesia; Recep Tayyip Erdo?an, President of T?rkiye; and Anthony Norman Albanese, Prime Minister of Australia.
The MIKTA leaders adopted a joint press statement at this meeting reaffirming their commitment to cooperation within MIKTA in areas such as sustainable development, international peace and security, and global governance. Each leader emphasized MIKTA’s role in key fields including sustainable development and financing, food security, international peace and security, global health, science and technological innovation and digital cooperation, youth and future generations, multilateral systems, and global governance reform.
In particular, amid growing international concerns over illegal military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, including North Korea’s troop deployments, the MIKTA leaders urged all United Nations (UN) member states to support UN resolutions, including the UN Charter and Security Council resolutions, the Presidential Office reported.
This meeting, held at the proposal of Mexico, the chair country of MIKTA this year, marks the third consecutive year of MIKTA leaders’ meetings since 2022. The leaders evaluated progress in Mexico’s three priority areas as chair: strengthening multilateralism, development efforts centered on women, and enhanced coordination among development cooperation agencies.
Furthermore, they reaffirmed their determination to carry out cross-regional cooperation and strengthen MIKTA’s constructive role in international issues when Korea assumes the MIKTA chairmanship next year.
The Presidential Office explained, "This is seen as an opportunity to reaffirm at the highest level the solidarity among MIKTA member countries and their willingness to cooperate in responding to various challenges facing the international community."
