Shinan-gun Creates Sustainable Garden City Model

Forum on Garden City in Jaeundo Held on the 21st

Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, will hold the ‘Sustainable Shinan Garden City Forum’ on the 21st at the Ramada Hotel on Jaeundo Island to explore sustainable garden culture and development plans as a garden city.


The forum was organized to share garden culture by utilizing Shinan-gun’s islands, natural and ecological landscapes, and cultural landscapes as a garden city, and to present a new vision of a garden city that the public can enjoy.

According to the county on the 18th, the forum is hosted by Shinan-gun and organized by the Korean Vegetation Society, bringing together garden and ecology experts and academics to discuss the current status and development directions of domestic garden city policies and plans.


In particular, Shinan-gun plans to use the forum to respond to local extinction as a garden city and to seek ways to revitalize garden culture and related industries.


The theme of the forum is set as ‘Responding to Local Extinction and Exploring Garden City Plans,’ with various experts in gardens and urban ecosystems delivering presentations and discussions.


Presenters include Nam Nam-cheol, CEO of Catticleung Bio; Nam Su-hwan, Garden Promotion Director at the Korea National Arboretum Garden Management Office; Song Myung-jun, CEO of Semiwon in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi-do; and Choi Young-eun, Director of the River Wetland Vegetation Research Institute affiliated with the Korean Vegetation Society, who will discuss Shinan-gun’s potential as a garden city along with ecological sustainability and the social value of garden culture.


Additionally, the discussion will be led by Kim Chang-hwan, President of the Korean Vegetation Society, as the chair, with participation from Yoo Young-han, President of the Korean Ecological Society; Kim Jun-seon, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Forest Resources at Suncheon National University; and Kim Jong-ho, Director of the Namdo Garden Research Institute, engaging in in-depth conversations about Shinan-gun’s development potential as a garden city.


A county official stated, “Garden culture is an important resource that goes beyond simple urban aesthetics to improve the quality of life for citizens and contribute to regional economic revitalization. Through this forum, we aim to create a sustainable Shinan garden city model based on various ideas and visions presented by domestic and international experts.”
