Leading the Establishment of Medical Schools Since the Opening of the 22nd National Assembly
“Result of Efforts by Party Members and City/Provincial Councilors, Including Signature Campaigns”
Kim Moon-su, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea (Jeonnam Suncheon, Gwangyang, Gokseong, Gurye Gap), announced on the 18th that he "welcomes the agreement on the university integration between Suncheon National University and Mokpo National University as a decisive progress for promoting an integrated medical school."
In a press release on the same day, Representative Kim emphasized, "This agreement is an important step to resolve the long-standing wish of Jeonnam residents who do not have a medical school and to drastically change the regional medical environment."
The Democratic Party's Suncheon, Gwangyang, Gokseong, Gurye Gap regional committee, centered on Representative Kim, party members, and city and provincial councilors, formed a special committee for attracting a medical school, and has been making efforts such as starting a signature campaign along with a head-shaving ceremony.
On May 30, the opening day of the 22nd National Assembly, Representative Kim declared the attraction of a medical school to Suncheon National University as one of his "three major goals" in legislative activities and introduced the "Special Act on the Establishment of Suncheon National University Medical School and University Hospital" as his first bill. He also drafted a special law for establishing a medical school based on the integration of the two universities and secured the signatures of 17 members of the National Assembly.
Amid the tense standoff where Suncheon City and Suncheon National University declared non-participation in the Jeonnam Province medical school selection contest, Representative Kim proposed a win-win solution. At that time, he persuaded by emphasizing, "Non-participation in the contest means a 0% chance of attracting a medical school, participation means 50%, and participation as a joint or integrated medical school means 100%."
During last month's comprehensive audit of the National Assembly, Representative Kim obtained verbal and written responses from Education Minister Lee Ju-ho regarding the "university integration," "integrated medical school," "quota allocation," and "preliminary accreditation evaluation of the medical school" for the two universities, laying the groundwork for the integration agreement between Suncheon National University and Mokpo National University.
Representative Kim said, "The integration of Suncheon National University and Mokpo National University is the result of efforts made together by party members of the regional committee, city and provincial councilors, and citizens," and added, "Not only the National Assembly members from the Jeonnam region but also Jeonnam Province, Suncheon National University, Mokpo National University, Suncheon City, and Mokpo City must all unite their efforts to achieve the common goal of establishing an integrated medical school."
