Paul-Tyson Match Breaks Records in Spectacle... Netflix Stumbles Due to Buffering

According to Netflix on the 18th, 60 million households watched the match live. The peak concurrent streams reached up to 65 million.

The previous women's lightweight title fight between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano also drew 50 million households watching live. Netflix stated, "It will be recorded as the most-watched women's sports event in U.S. history."

The atmosphere at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, where the match took place, was also intense. With 72,300 spectators in attendance, it set the record for the largest boxing audience in U.S. history outside of Las Vegas.

However, most viewers expressed dissatisfaction with Netflix's boasting about the viewership numbers. The post on the X (formerly Twitter) account announcing the viewership received about 10,000 comments, mostly negative. The main complaint was severe buffering that prevented proper viewing of the match.

It is presumed that the Netflix streaming system was overloaded due to the large number of viewers accessing simultaneously. The U.S. economic media CNBC cited Downdetector, a site tracking online outages, reporting that as of 11 p.m. Eastern Time on the night of the match, about 95,000 connection failure reports were received.
