Mercury, Expansion of Defense Projects Including Military Satellite Programs

Mercury, a specialized information and communication equipment company, announced on the 18th that it plans to expand and develop defense projects such as military satellite projects in the future, leveraging new defense contracts with the Navy and Army.

From 2022 to 2023, Mercury completed the supply of signal conversion units and optical signal conversion units, which are transmission devices for the ‘Military Satellite Communication System-II System Development Project’ to Hanwha Systems, totaling 16.9 billion KRW, and is currently negotiating additional mass production in 2024.

In August, Mercury signed a contract worth 4.4 billion KRW with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration’s Defense Technology Quality Institute and the Army for the ‘Rear Area Satellite Communication System Combat Efficiency Improvement Project,’ and plans to develop prototypes and consult with the Army, proceeding smoothly with the contract.

Additionally, last month, Mercury signed a contract worth 20.5 billion KRW with KT, the main contractor of the Navy’s ‘Maritime Operation Satellite Communication System-II Project’ commissioned by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, for network and information security, access control, and monitoring systems. The contract period is from October 7, 2023, to December 15, 2027.

Mercury, a leading domestic WiFi AP company, participated in the ‘Development of Intelligent Stealth Technology Minimizing Exposure of Public Work and Mission Information Communication Resources’ led by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), and on November 14, gave an expert lecture on the ‘Stealth AP’ using WiFi-based intelligent stealth technology at the Navy Logistics Command Ship Technology Research Institute.

The ‘Stealth AP’ is expected to be proposed to each military branch and public institutions after completion through military demonstration projects. Since security has been enhanced, it can replace WiFi APs that were previously used in a limited manner, increasing its applicability to battlefield networks, thereby expanding future supply opportunities and business scalability.

A Mercury official stated, “Based on the contracted defense projects, we plan to actively participate not only in future defense projects but also in various satellite projects such as low Earth orbit satellite communications, and actively engage in military smart projects that will play a key role on the battlefield to expand our defense business.”
