Jeonnam Offshore Wind Power Phase 1, Commissioning Test Until March Next Year
Prime Minister Han Duck-soo inspected the commissioning site of the Jeonnam Offshore Wind Power Phase 1 Complex, currently under construction off the coast of Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, by helicopter on the 18th. After touring the wind turbine storage site at Mokpo New Port, he also spent time encouraging local government officials, companies, and other stakeholders through an on-site meeting.
The event was attended by Prime Minister Han, Nam Hyung-gi, 2nd Vice Minister of the Office for Government Policy Coordination, Choi Nam-ho, 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and other government officials. From local governments, Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, and Park Hong-ryul, Mayor of Mokpo, were present, along with Chu Hyung-wook, CEO of SK Innovation E&S, and Yoo Tae-seung, Co-CEO of CIP/COP Korea, representing the corporate sector.
The Jeonnam Offshore Wind Power Phase 1 Complex is the first project of the offshore wind power complex in the Jeonnam region (Sinan) and holds great significance as the first large-scale complex led by the private sector in Korea. It is scheduled to enter commercial operation after commissioning from the 18th until March next year, followed by completion.

The government expects that the commissioning of the Jeonnam region (Sinan) offshore wind power complex project, which has now entered full swing, will lead to the expansion of related infrastructure such as support ports and industrial complexes, as well as the attraction of related companies. The government explains that this will contribute to revitalizing the local economy and balanced national development.
The government plans to prioritize regional investment issues in national governance to ensure that large-scale private investments like offshore wind power become a catalyst for regional economic growth, and will closely monitor progress on-site. Prime Minister Han said, "The activation of offshore wind power will strengthen the foundation of energy security and serve as an opportunity for Jeonnam to become a leading region in renewable energy."
The Jeonnam region (Sinan) offshore wind power complex will attract 48 trillion won in private capital by 2035. Including the Jeonnam Offshore Wind Power Phase 1 Complex, a total of 26 complexes with a generation capacity of 8.2 gigawatts (GW) will be established, making it the largest scale in the world. The 8.2 GW capacity is comparable to six Korean-style nuclear reactors (1.4 GW each).
In this process, a new steel pier dedicated to offshore wind power will be constructed at Mokpo New Port, and a hinterland complex of about 130,000 pyeong will be developed to house offshore wind power component suppliers. Approximately 120,000 jobs are expected to be created in the 60,000-pyeong Haenam Hwawon Shipbuilding Industrial Complex.
