Gongju City in Chungnam, the leading domestic production area for chestnuts, has been re-designated as the "Gongju Chestnut Special Zone." Gongju is the only region in the country designated as a special zone for chestnuts.

Gongju City announced on the 18th that the Gongju Chestnut Special Zone has been re-designated for the fourth time since its initial designation in 2010.

Accordingly, the city plans to invest a total of 48.9 billion KRW by 2027 to establish eco-friendly and labor-saving production infrastructure, develop processed chestnut products, expand Gongju chestnut distribution networks, and implement strategic brand marketing.

Mayor Choi Woncheol stated, "The re-designation of the Gongju Chestnut Special Zone will strengthen the recognition of the Gongju chestnut brand, secure a stable distribution network, and increase farmers' income," adding, "We will do our best to ensure the successful hosting of the '2025 Korea Chestnut Industry Expo,' which is being prepared to revitalize Korea's chestnut industry."
