The city plans to extend the settlement period by one month until November to clear the remaining unclaimed refunds.

Personal local income tax refunds mainly arise from national tax corrections and occur irregularly every month. Currently, Paju City has 4,462 unclaimed personal local income tax refunds totaling 177 million KRW, of which 2,372 cases are under 10,000 KRW, accounting for 53% of the total.

Unclaimed refunds can be checked and applied for through the Wetax system and the automated response system. Paju City sends monthly refund notices by mail and also accepts applications via visits and phone calls.

The city makes efforts to return refunds through various methods, such as sending mobile public alert messages related to refunds, followed by KakaoPay notification talks to those who did not receive the messages, and sending additional notices to taxpayers whose refund claim periods are about to expire.

Gu Ja-jeong, Head of the Taxpayer Support Division, said, “Local tax refunds must be claimed within five years from the date of occurrence, or the right to refund will expire. We urge taxpayers to actively exercise their rights within the period. We will strive to increase the refund rate further to protect taxpayers’ rights and to provide more trustworthy tax administration.”
