TESOL Training at Sookmyung Women's University from January 6-17 Next Year for 95 Local Elementary Students
Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) is recruiting 95 elementary school students from the local area to participate in the "2024 Winter Vacation Children's English Camp" until the 28th of this month. The English camp is operated in collaboration with the district and the TESOL Department of the Graduate School of Sookmyung Women's University.
The Yongsan-gu Children's English Camp provides high-quality English education at an affordable price, gaining high popularity among local parents and students every year. In this summer vacation English camp, the competition rate for the 1st and 2nd grade elementary classes reached 10 to 1 by lottery.
The English camp will be held at Sookmyung Women's University for 10 days from January 6 to 17 next year, excluding weekends, with 7 hours per day. After a level test, classes are conducted in groups tailored to each level with native English-speaking teachers. It is an opportunity to naturally acquire English while participating in various experiential activities and field trips themed around coding and science.
The recruitment target is a total of 95 students: 20 students in grades 1-2 (including 3 from low-income families) and 75 students in grades 3-6 (including 12 from low-income families). Applicants must have an address in Yongsan-gu as of November 18, and foreigners, foreign nationals, and overseas Koreans are not eligible to apply.
The participation fee per person is 840,000 KRW, but the district supports 420,000 KRW, so participants only need to pay the remaining 420,000 KRW. Basic livelihood security recipients, near-poverty class, and low-income single-parent families are exempt from the self-payment to encourage participation. Among general participants, families with two or more children will receive an additional 100,000 KRW support to reduce the burden of education expenses. However, this support ends when the budget is exhausted.
Students and parents who wish to participate can apply online through the Yongsan-gu Education Comprehensive Portal by 4 p.m. on the 28th of this month. If the number of applicants exceeds the recruitment quota, a public lottery will be held at 2 p.m. on the 3rd of next month in the presence of the audit officer. Selected participants will be announced on the notice board and via individual text messages at 2 p.m. on the 4th of next month.
District Mayor Park Hee-young said, "I hope that students will improve their English skills and have a meaningful vacation through the English camp," and added, "Yongsan-gu will continue to promote various foreign language education programs to become a city that fosters global talents and a top education district."
Meanwhile, besides the children's English camp, the district operates native speaker foreign language classes, hub-type English experience centers, children's English libraries, and small library English programs.
