Successful Fusion of Advanced Drone Technology and Sports
Held in Changwon
Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam successfully hosted the "1st Changwon Special City Mayor's Cup Drone Basketball Tournament" at the Changwon Convention Center, co-organized with the Korea Drone Basketball Association and the Changwon Drone Association.
The tournament held on the 16th was organized to showcase the potential for development in the drone industry through the fusion of drone technology and sports, and to provide citizens with an opportunity to experience a new sports culture.
The event was attended by around 200 people, including Hong Nampyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, Son Taehwa, Chairman of the Changwon Special City Council, Choi Jeonghun, Chairman of the Economic Welfare and Women’s Committee, other key figures, participating players, and citizens.
The competition featured 16 teams from across the country, competing by controlling drone basketballs to score in drone basketball hoops, with intense contests among the drone basketball pilots.
The tournament, which highlighted the players’ creative and precise drone piloting skills, provided spectators with a unique spectacle and an engaging experience. In addition to drone basketball, drone-related hands-on programs were also offered for citizens to directly participate in, receiving enthusiastic responses.
Hong Nampyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, stated, “This drone basketball tournament opened a new chapter where cutting-edge technology meets sports, and it became an opportunity for Changwon City to lead the development and popularization of the drone industry. Going forward, Changwon City will continue to engage with citizens through various innovative programs utilizing drone technology.”
Meanwhile, the city plans to further activate the drone-related industry through this drone basketball tournament and develop new content including drone sports, aiming to develop Changwon into a central hub for the drone industry.
