Significant Expansion and Relaxation of Scholarship Program Criteria
Scholarship Fund Increased by 2 Billion KRW by 2026
Yangcheon-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced on the 17th that it will significantly expand the ‘2024 Yangcheon-gu Scholarship Student’ program to nurture future talents who will lead the local community, selecting 143 students, a 54% increase from last year’s 80, and awarding a total of over 100 million KRW in scholarships.
By category, 88 general scholarship students (high school and university students within 100% of median income), 24 academic excellence scholarship students (high school students with an average subject rank of 2.75 or better in the first semester), and 31 special talent scholarship students (elementary, middle, and high school students who placed within the top 3 in metropolitan city or provincial level or higher competitions in arts, sports, or science) were selected.

The selected scholarship students will receive scholarship certificates and scholarships at the ‘2024 Yangcheon-gu Scholarship Student Certificate Award Ceremony’ held at the Yangcheon Education Support Center on the 18th, with amounts of 300,000 KRW for elementary and middle school students, 600,000 KRW for high school students, and 500,000 to 1,800,000 KRW for university students per person.
In particular, this year the district raised the maximum scholarship amount for university students from 1,700,000 KRW to 1,800,000 KRW to reduce the burden of university tuition fees, which are a major expense for university student households. Additionally, to enable more local talents to realize their dreams through the scholarship system, the eligibility criteria for ‘general scholarship students’ were relaxed from within 90% of median income to within 100% starting last year, and the limit on the number of recommendations per neighborhood was removed. The eligibility for university general scholarship students was also expanded from the 4th to the 5th income bracket according to the Korea Student Aid Foundation’s financial support classification.
Lee Hyo-min, a second-year student at Moku Middle School who was selected as a special talent scholarship student, is a science talent who won first place at the ‘Seoul Science Exhibition Finals’ hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. Lee said, “As a Yangcheon-gu scholarship student, I will take an interest in a wider range of fields and become a person who changes the world for the better.”
Yangcheon-gu has been operating the scholarship program since 2017, awarding scholarships totaling 233.6 million KRW to 356 students. In particular, in 2023, the ‘Yangcheon-gu Scholarship Fund Establishment and Operation Ordinance’ was revised to remove the fund limit regulation, and the scholarship fund is planned to be increased by 500 million KRW annually until 2026, totaling an additional 2 billion KRW from the existing 2 billion KRW. Through expanded contributions, the district plans to increase both the amount of scholarships awarded and the number of recipients.
District Mayor Lee Gi-jae said, “I hope the district’s scholarship program will provide students with opportunities to learn and serve as a solid stepping stone for them to pursue their dreams,” adding, “We will continue to operate a substantial scholarship program to discover local talents who will lead the future of Yangcheon.”
