Gwangju City is accelerating the development of the ‘Gwangju-type AI semiconductor’ in collaboration with fabless company AimFuture, recently attracted to the region, reflecting local demand.
On the 16th, Gwangju City announced that it held the ‘First Technology Exchange Meeting for the Development of Gwangju-type AI Semiconductors’ integrated with regional strategic industries at the Utop Boutique Hotel & Residence in Seo-gu on the 15th.
The technology exchange meeting was attended by Kim Chang-soo, CEO of AimFuture Co., Ltd., Kim Sung-chang, Director of the Honam Research Headquarters at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), as well as representatives from five local demand companies including Dooyoung Industrial Co., Ltd., Alpha Knox Co., Ltd., NH Networks Co., Ltd., Intflow Co., Ltd., and Hogreen Air Co., Ltd., along with Gwangju City officials.
Following the signing of a business agreement with the global design house company Aegisland in the semiconductor design (fabless) sector in September, the city signed a memorandum of understanding with chipless company AimFuture in October, establishing a cooperative network to apply Gwangju-type AI semiconductor chips to products of local demand companies for commercialization.
The technology exchange meeting served as a platform for AimFuture, a leading domestic intelligent semiconductor developer, and local strategic industry demand companies to discuss mutual cooperation plans for the development of Gwangju-type AI semiconductors. AimFuture and the five local demand companies introduced their respective technologies and products and discussed development and application plans for the Gwangju-type AI semiconductor.
AimFuture was founded in 2020 by researchers who studied core artificial intelligence technologies at LG Electronics’ North America Research Center in Silicon Valley, USA. It has established itself as a specialized company developing neural processing units (NPU) and providing intellectual property (IP) and AI algorithm solutions necessary for on-device AI systems.
The local demand companies aim to develop various AI-based solutions, including Dooyoung Industrial’s pet care services, Alpha Knox’s personalized healthcare technology, NH Networks’ early fire prediction technology for electric vehicle charging stations, Intflow’s contactless livestock management solutions, and Hogreen Air’s predictive maintenance technology for hydrogen fuel cells.
The city plans to support the spread of AI-based solutions across various fields through the demonstration of semiconductor technologies developed by fabless companies settled in the region. Additionally, alongside the development of ‘Gwangju-type AI semiconductors,’ efforts will be made to nurture and employ local talent.
It is expected to lead digital innovation through the convergence of AI and intelligent semiconductors and contribute to the globalization of highly competitive domestic technologies across industries.
Kim Yong-seung, Director of the AI Industry Office of Gwangju City, said, “With fabless companies Aegisland and AimFuture coming to Gwangju, the future of the Gwangju AI semiconductor industry is bright. We will actively support fabless companies to firmly establish themselves in Gwangju.” He added, “It is expected that local companies’ product competitiveness will improve as AI semiconductors and solutions with price competitiveness, which were previously dependent on expensive foreign semiconductor chips, can now be provided.”
