1947 Royal Wedding Cake
Weighing 226kg, 2.7m Tall
Still Auctioned Today for High Prices
A 'slice of cake' from the wedding of the late Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and her late husband, Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was sold for a whopping 3.9 million KRW, drawing attention. This cake has reportedly been preserved for 77 years.
Elizabeth II and Duke Philip were married on November 20, 1947. At the time, a massive cake weighing 226 kg and standing 2.7 meters tall was presented at the royal wedding, and one slice of that cake recently went up for auction at the UK auction house 'Reeman Dansie.'
The reason the cake from 77 years ago could be preserved until 2024 is as follows. After the wedding, the Queen cut the huge cake and gave it as a token of appreciation to the royal staff who prepared the food. The cake was cut into convenient square pieces and packaged in luxurious cases.
One of the many cake slices was given to a woman named Marion Paulson. She passed it on to a staff member working at 'Holyrood House,' the royal residence in Edinburgh, Scotland. This cake slice has survived until now and appeared on the auction market.
Some of this cake, divided into 2,000 pieces and delivered to royal staff and charities across various regions of the UK, still remains and occasionally goes up for auction. Lehman Dancy website
The wedding cake was cut into as many as 2,000 pieces and distributed to royal staff, charities, and others. Some of these pieces still remain and occasionally appear at auctions. This particular slice was sold for $2,800 (approximately 3.95 million KRW). It is known that in 2013, a slice of this cake was also auctioned off for over 3 million KRW.
Although the cake slice can no longer be eaten after so many decades, it is said to be highly valued among collectors due to its rarity.
