Police Officer Who Demanded Sexual Relations from Suspect's Mother Receives Reduced Sentence in Second Trial

A police officer who was prosecuted for demanding sexual relations and sexually harassing the mother of a suspect received a reduced sentence in the second trial.

The Seoul Southern District Court Criminal Appeal Division 1 (Chief Judge Maeng Hyun-mu) held a sentencing hearing on the 14th for Police Sergeant Kim (52) of the Seoul Gangseo Police Station, who was charged with forcible molestation, and overturned the original verdict. Sergeant Kim was sentenced to six months in prison with a two-year probation and was also ordered to complete 40 hours of a sexual violence treatment program.

The court stated, "Considering the relationship between the defendant and the victim and the circumstances of the crime, the nature of the offense is serious," but added, "However, since the defendant fully confessed to the crime, deposited 10 million won for the victim, paid an additional 20 million won, and reached an amicable settlement with the victim, the original sentence appears excessively harsh and unfair," explaining the reason for the sentencing.

Previously, the first trial court sentenced him to six months in prison and ordered 40 hours of a sexual violence treatment program, stating, "As a police officer, he privately met the victim, who was related to the case, demanded entertainment, made sexually harassing remarks, and forcibly molested her, which is a very serious offense. The victim suffered great shock and is pleading for severe punishment."

According to the prosecution, at the end of 2022, Kim is accused of privately meeting Ms. A, the mother of a suspect in a case he handled, and demanding sexual relations while massaging or rubbing her hands and feet. In response, the Seoul Gangseo Police Station placed Sergeant Kim on standby and excluded him from duty.
