Incheon Research Institute Announces Feasibility Study Results on Memorial Hall Location
Sites for the establishment of a memorial hall to inherit the spirit of the democratization movement in Incheon have been proposed.
On the 14th, the Incheon Institute presented a total of nine candidate sites, including eight existing facilities and new construction sites, through the "Feasibility Study on the Location Selection of the Incheon Democratization Movement Memorial Hall" report.
The candidate sites utilizing existing facilities include Wolmi Culture Center, Incheon Urban Industrial Mission (Mimun's Worker Church), Old Citizens' Hall Shelter, Incheon Premium Hall, Subong Culture Center, Incheon Museum Park, Incheon National University Jemulpo Campus Seongri Hall, and Incheon Northern Workers' Comprehensive Welfare Center, totaling eight locations. The new construction candidate site includes the area around Jayu Park.

The Incheon Institute selected candidate sites in major city areas such as Jung-gu, Dong-gu, Michuhol-gu, and Bupyeong-gu based on criteria including the historical significance of these locations, their connection with local cultural resources, accessibility, and the feasibility of securing the sites.
Incheon has played an important role in Korea's democratization history, including the April 19 Movement by students of Incheon Mechanical Technical High School and the May 3 Incheon Democratic Uprising, but a space to commemorate and inherit this history has yet to be established.
Last August, the amendment to the "Democratization Movement Memorial Project Act," which explicitly recognized the May 3 Incheon Democratic Uprising as part of the democratization movement, passed the National Assembly, thereby establishing a legal foundation for commemorating the democratization movement in Incheon.
This report also analyzed cases of memorial halls established by other local governments in accordance with the relevant law.
An official from the Incheon Institute stated, "With the legal foundation established to inherit the spirit of Incheon's democratization movement, the memorial hall should be discussed through public-private-academic governance to secure the optimal location and become a representative historical and cultural asset of the region."
