The ‘Hamkkehan Georeum Center,’ which helps rehabilitate drug addicts and supports their healthy reintegration into society, opened on the 13th at Yangcheon Hall in Yeonhyang-dong, Suncheon City.
This facility, equivalent to a drug addiction rehabilitation center, is not an inpatient psychiatric rehabilitation facility but a place where addicts use the center during the day while maintaining daily activities such as work. It operates from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
It was established by the Jeonnam Branch of the Korea Drug Prevention Movement Headquarters under the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, and Jeonnam Province plans to fully operate it from next year by supporting various expenses.
At the center, mental health professionals, psychological counselors, and other experts identify drug addicts within the community and provide customized individual recovery support services according to the degree of addiction, including psychological counseling and group programs.
When drug damage is suspected, it is crucial to confirm exposure through testing and prevent further harm. From 2025, Jeonnam Province will implement anonymous drug testing as a new project to protect residents from drug crimes. Any Jeonnam resident can receive free testing for six types of drugs?Philopon, Daema, Morphine, Amphetamine, Ecstasy, and others?at nearby public health centers.
Lee Sang-sim, Director of the Jeonnam Provincial Health and Welfare Bureau, said, "Drug addiction is not an individual problem but a societal issue that requires comprehensive prevention and treatment responses. The opening of the drug addiction rehabilitation center and the introduction of anonymous testing will serve as important bases to help residents lead safe and healthy lives."
