Gwangju Uchi Zoo conducted animal treatment and surgical practice training for prospective veterinarians for the first time this year.

On the 13th, the Uchi Park Management Office in Gwangju City held the "Zoo Animal Treatment and Surgical Practice Training" for 24 students from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Chonnam National University. Prior to this, Uchi Zoo also provided training for 22 veterinary students on the 1st of this month.

This training was organized to develop professional competencies through zoo veterinary education for prospective veterinarians. The students received theoretical education on the veterinary characteristics of zoo animals such as carnivores, reptiles, endangered species, and natural monuments, as well as case studies from Uchi Zoo.

They also had practical opportunities including basic surgical procedures and reptile skin suturing techniques using artificial skin. Alongside zoo veterinary doctors, they conducted rounds in the bear and reptile enclosures, observed a necropsy of a fruit bat, and studied the anatomical structure and basic disease diagnosis of bats.

Sung Chang-min, head of the Uchi Park Management Office, said, "As this is the first training conducted for veterinary students this year, the students’ satisfaction was high. We plan to gradually expand the program by addressing any shortcomings to foster specialized veterinary personnel for zoos."
