Successful Beer and Makgeolli Festivals from May to October... 3,000 Visitors Daily Boost Local Economy

The Gwangjin-gu Traditional Market Association (President Ryu Jeong-rae) has attracted attention by donating 5.5 million won from the profits of the beer and Makgeolli festival to vulnerable groups.

Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) organized festivals highlighting the unique characteristics of each market as part of the traditional market revitalization support project from May to October. From the opening event "Show Me the Jayang Hangang" to the grand finale "Hwayang Yeonhwa," the festivals received great interest. As a result, more than 3,000 visitors came daily on average, leading to a 90% increase in sales.

The festival enthusiasm extended into warm sponsorship. All eight traditional markets pooled their profits to donate 5.5 million won. The merchants expressed their heartfelt wish for the funds to be used to help neighbors in need. Last year, Junggok Jeil Market (Association President Ryu Jeong-rae) donated 1.32 million won.

The donation ceremony was held on the 11th at the Gwangjin-gu Office. Ryu Jeong-rae, President of the Gwangjin-gu Traditional Market Association, said, “I thank the Gwangjin-gu Office and the merchants who worked hard to ensure all festivals were operated without safety accidents,” and added, “The traditional markets will also take the lead in making small efforts to comfort marginalized neighbors.”

Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “This donation is meaningful as the pinnacle of coexistence between traditional markets and the local community. I express my gratitude to the merchants’ kind hearts who think of their neighbors despite the difficult economic situation,” and added, “We will implement various support measures so that traditional markets can continue to be beloved tourist attractions.”

The donated funds received that day will be entrusted to the Gwangjin Welfare Foundation and used to support the living stability of vulnerable groups for a warm winter.
