Trump Expected to Nominate Marco Rubio as Secretary of State

Donald Trump, the President-elect of the United States, is expected to nominate Marco Rubio, a U.S. Senator from Florida, as Secretary of State, a key position in his cabinet, according to the New York Times (NYT) on the 11th (local time), citing three sources.

Officials close to Trump said that although Trump might change his mind at the last minute, it appears that he has chosen Senator Rubio, who was also considered as a running mate (vice presidential candidate), as the next Secretary of State.

Trump Expected to Nominate Marco Rubio as Secretary of State Senator Marco Rubio Yonhap News

Senator Rubio was born into a Cuban immigrant family and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010, buoyed by the hardline conservative 'Tea Party' movement. He is classified as a hawk due to his tough stance on foreign and security policies regarding China and Iran. He holds a skeptical view on North Korea's denuclearization and mentioned reviewing the U.S. military presence in South Korea in 2020.

Recently, regarding the Ukraine war, he has aligned with President-elect Trump’s views and expressed support for ending the conflict.

During the 2016 presidential primary, Rubio opposed Trump, but since Trump was nominated as the candidate, Rubio has actively supported him. Although he was not selected as the vice presidential candidate in this election, he was one of the most loyal supporters who actively assisted Trump during the campaign.
