Taean County in South Chungcheong Province has designated the period from the 15th to March 15th next year as the "Winter Countermeasure Period" and is making every effort to establish measures to minimize damage to the lives and property of its residents.

On the 11th, the county announced that it held a comprehensive countermeasure briefing session for heavy snow and cold wave preparedness for 2024 in the main conference room at the county office, with Vice Governor Lee Jooyoung, department heads, relevant officials, and about 40 participants, to review response plans.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, this winter's temperatures in the Taean region are expected to be similar to or generally higher than average, with the possibility of less precipitation than usual. However, due to the geographical influence of the west coast when cold air flows in, there may be areas with heavy snowfall.

Based on a comprehensive inspection of disaster-prone facilities conducted last month, the county will focus on monitoring a total of 18 vulnerable sites, including 5 structures susceptible to snow accumulation, 7 sections prone to icing, 4 sections vulnerable to snow removal, and 2 coastal areas at risk of casualties. Additionally, the county will continue to inspect 54 designated cold wave shelters in the area.

Furthermore, a 24-hour emergency work system will be established, and situation management will be conducted through 5 stages and 13 collaborative functions. The county will also designate 2 emergency cold wave shelters and 4 24-hour cold wave shelters, operate 415 windbreak facilities, 28 heated benches, and 7 smart shelters to enhance the operation of cold wave mitigation facilities.

In addition, for vulnerable groups such as low-income seniors living alone and people with disabilities, the county will prepare and distribute a total of 1,200 winter supply packages. In the event of a weather warning, immediate public announcements will be made through the county website, village broadcasts, text messages, and electronic displays to ensure a prompt response.

Moreover, thorough safety inspections will be carried out for key facilities such as traditional markets, tourist attractions, cultural assets, and roads, led by the relevant departments. The county will also provide guidelines for the management of agricultural and marine products to farming and fishing households.

A county official stated, "We will utilize senior centers and village halls to increase the number of cold wave shelters from 54 to over 150 in the future, and will thoroughly inspect equipment such as snow removal vehicles to ensure they function smoothly as part of our comprehensive response."
