Goyang Special City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) and the Goyang Office of Education announced on the 11th that they submitted an application for the ‘Gyeonggi-type Science High School’ to the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education on the 8th.

The city included in the application for the ‘Gyeonggi-type Science High School,’ a regionally specialized science high school focusing on one field reflecting local characteristics, a plan to establish a space and aerospace specialized science high school based on industrial and humanities-social infrastructure.

The city has a concentrated development system for the drone and UAM industries, including the first Daedeok Drone Flight Field in northern Gyeonggi and the Goyang Drone Valley, based on the country’s largest drone anchor center.

Additionally, leveraging advanced 4th industrial infrastructure such as the Ilsan Technovalley, bio-precision medical cluster, next-generation mobility, excellent metropolitan transportation networks, proximity to Incheon International Airport and Gimpo Airport, and the regional advantage of Korea Aerospace University, a space and aerospace specialized university, the city plans to attract a space and aerospace specialized science high school.

Citizen opinions emphasizing the importance of operating a distinctive curriculum were also reflected based on a prior citizen survey on the establishment of the science high school. In the survey, 94% (7,147 out of 7,579 participants) expressed hope for attracting a science high school.

The city plans to nurture core scientific talents who will lead future industries through a curriculum reflecting the latest trends in the space and aerospace industry such as launch vehicles, artificial satellites, and future mobility, combined with industry-academia-research linked education based on Goyang’s advanced industrial foundation.

Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang Special City stated, “In line with the new space era, nurturing scientific talents to lead the future space and aerospace industry is essential. A specialized science high school that can provide systematic education from youth for specialized and differentiated science and technology talent development is absolutely necessary, and Goyang will be the optimal location.”

He added, “We will focus our capabilities on establishing the Goyang Space and Aerospace Science High School, which will cultivate global future scientific talents differentiated from existing science high schools.”

Meanwhile, the Provincial Office of Education announced the plan for the new designation of the Gyeonggi-type Science High School in September and is scheduled to announce the results of the first-stage preliminary designation by the end of November.
