Gunsan City Accelerates Expansion Construction of Military-Police Joint Cemetery

Additional 930 Flat Graves Constructed
Convenience Facilities Including Parking Lot Provided
Spouse Joint Burial Cost Support Also Offered

Gunsan City in Jeonbuk announced on the 11th that it plans to complete the 'Joint Military and Police Cemetery Expansion Project,' which is currently 75% complete, within this year to facilitate the convenience of national veterans.

According to the city, the Joint Military and Police Cemetery is currently at full capacity, and when national veterans pass away, they are interred at the Imsil National Cemetery and Gunsan Seunghwawon. To address this issue, the city invested 2.3 billion KRW to create a park-style burial ground. The expansion will add 930 flat graves to the existing 999 tombstone graves, and will include convenience facilities such as 60 parking spaces and two pergolas (shade structures). A 'flat grave' refers to a burial site where the cremated remains of the deceased are buried underground in a flat area.

The city revised related ordinances in April to additionally support the joint burial costs for spouses of national veterans. A city official explained, "Once the Joint Military and Police Cemetery expansion project is completed, national veterans who have lived in the region for more than 10 years at the time of death can be relocated and interred in the Joint Military and Police Cemetery."

Mayor Kang Im-jun stated, "While striving to honor and support veterans and their families who have dedicated themselves to the nation, we will do our utmost to ensure the successful completion of the Joint Military and Police Cemetery project."
