Namdong-gu, Incheon, is changing the designated distance between tobacco retailer businesses from the existing 50m to 100m.
The district recently held a council meeting on ordinances and regulations, approving the original draft of the "Partial Amendment to the Regulations on Designation Standards for Tobacco Retailers in Namdong-gu," and announced on the 11th that it plans to promulgate and enforce it on the 2nd of next month.
The main amendments include expanding the designated distance between tobacco retailer businesses from 50m to 100m and introducing a grace period regulation to ensure the stable establishment of the system.
The expansion of the designated distance to 100m for tobacco retailers is the fourth case among local governments in the Incheon area, following Seo-gu, Jung-gu, and Michuhol-gu. Additionally, to protect the business rights of existing tobacco retailers, the district has set a grace period regulation whereby retailers who close their existing business and receive a new designation at the same location within five years will be subject to the previous distance regulation of 50m.
Through this amendment, the district expects to alleviate excessive competition among retail stores such as convenience stores, helping retailers who have faced difficulties due to sharply decreased sales caused by competition to achieve stable management.
Park Jong-hyo, the district mayor, stated, "We will not only expand the designated distance for tobacco retailers but also explore various ways to support local small business owners to help alleviate their difficulties."
