Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will hold a special exhibition to commemorate the 2nd anniversary of the opening of the Nowon Train Village Swiss Pavilion within Hwarangdae Railroad Park.
The Nowon Train Village Swiss Pavilion is a miniature exhibition hall that faithfully reproduces the villages and trains of Switzerland, a world-renowned tourist destination. It offers a rich array of sights, including a 4.4m tall model of the Matterhorn in the Alps and 17 train models scaled down to 1/87 of actual size.
The special exhibition adds unique attractions and interactive experiences in line with its purpose. First, visitors can see the Live Steam train, which simulates the operation of a real steam-emitting train, adding a sense of vitality to the content.
Additional model trains are also on display. The models exhibited are the ‘Big Boy’ trains, presented in two types: G gauge with a scale of 1:22.5 and O gauge with a scale of 1:48. The Big Boy train is considered the largest steam-powered train ever operated on Earth.
Visitors can also see a train signal bell that was actually used as a train part, as well as a calliope, which is being exhibited for the first time in Korea. The calliope is a unique structure made by removing real whistles from steam locomotives and installing them in various sizes according to musical scales. It plays music by using steam to sound multiple pipes simultaneously.
Live performances of the calliope will be held during the exhibition, except in rainy weather when performances will be suspended. Additionally, children will have the opportunity to ring the train signal bell themselves.
Moreover, the district will present three intricately crafted dioramas themed around duck hunting and tteokbokki food trucks, evoking romance and memories for family visitors.
Interactive programs for children have also been greatly enhanced. First, a rail train that children can actually ride will be operated. The train measures 10m wide and 5m long, and children aged 2 to 7 can experience it for free during the event hours.
Last year’s hugely popular KTX paper model train making and a surprise challenge to find figures using dioramas will also be available.
The exhibition will be held for two days from the 16th to the 17th, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Nowon Train Village Exhibition Hall (622 Hwarang-ro).
Meanwhile, the district is currently adding the ‘Nowon Train Village Exhibition Hall - Italy Pavilion,’ scheduled for completion in 2025. It will showcase the history and cityscapes of major Italian tourist cities through meticulously crafted dioramas.
Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “We prepared this exhibition to commemorate the time spent with Nowon Train Village, offering nostalgia for adults and unique enjoyment for children. We will further enhance the appeal of the train village and Hwarangdae Railroad Park as tourist attractions, including the new Italy Pavilion.”
