Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jung Won-oh) announced that it has completed thorough preparations for a safe winter by installing road heating cables totaling 9.44 km across 51 locations within the district to prepare for heavy snowfall.
In response to concerns over sudden heavy snowfall and cold waves caused by climate change, Seongdong-gu has established the '2024/2025 Comprehensive Snow Removal Plan' and plans to devote full efforts to ensuring residents' safety for four months starting from November 15.
While operating a 24-hour Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, the district will minimize residents' inconvenience through rapid snow removal operations based on secured resources and personnel, including 2,086 tons of snow removal agents, 1,472 personnel, and 261 snow removal equipment units.
In particular, 11 additional locations on steep slopes will be equipped with smart remote snow removal systems in the form of road heating cables, bringing the total to 51 locations covering 9.44 km. The heating cables are embedded heating cable devices beneath the road surface, where sensors detect temperature and humidity, automatically melting snow when it falls. This system is eco-friendly as it eliminates the need for personnel to spread calcium chloride for snow removal across all sections, enabling quick and efficient response with fewer staff.
Since a pilot installation in 2018 on steep roads such as Kumho Mountain Road and in front of Oksu Elementary School’s main gate, road heating cables have been installed in a total of 40 locations covering 7.43 km (6.59 km for vehicle roads and 1.14 km for sidewalks) by 2023.
This year, an additional 11 locations covering 2.01 km will be equipped with heating cables, including ▲ 2 village bus routes (Muhakbong 7-gil, Dokseodang-ro 63-gil) ▲ 4 child protection zones (Maebong 18-gil, Haengdang-ro 9-gil, Jangteo 5-gil, Musumak 18-gil) ▲ 5 steep slopes (Kumho-ro 16-gil, Wangsimni-ro 31-gil, Kumho Station to Maebong-gil, Sageun-dong-gil, Dokseodang-ro 59-gil).
Four automatic brine spraying devices covering 1.64 km will also be operated. These devices are installed with nozzles at regular intervals along the roadside and automatically spray eco-friendly liquid snow removal agents to melt snow when it falls.
Additionally, the district will prioritize snow removal on main roads, steep slopes, and bus routes, while expanding snow removal services on side roads and sidewalks to ensure no blind spots in snow removal.
Furthermore, 488 snow removal boxes have been placed on major roads and expected freezing sections for residents to use voluntarily during emergencies, and 147 tons of snow removal agents will be supplied to 149 apartment complexes within the district.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, “Given the high risk of sudden heavy snowfall accompanied by cold waves due to abnormal weather, we are making even more meticulous efforts to implement snow removal measures,” and added, “We will carefully monitor every aspect of residents’ daily lives to ensure everyone can spend a warm and safe winter.”
