Type 1 Diabetes Managed with Insulin Injections

Recently, singer Yoon Hyun-sook (52), who revealed that she has type 1 diabetes, disclosed that she was shocked when her blood sugar level rose above 300.

On the 8th, Yoon Hyun-sook posted on her social media (SNS), "I was so hungry the day before that I ate dinner without taking insulin, and my blood sugar went over 300, causing a meltdown." She continued, "Today is a day to get serious and exercise hard, and eat lightly," adding, "As expected, my blood sugar is under control. Diet and exercise are the answer," sharing her blood sugar management tips. She concluded her post with the words, "Blood sugar, you were surprised too, right? I can do it when I want to," along with a short video of her exercising, a photo of her giving a thumbs-up after finishing her workout, and a blood sugar graph showing levels dropping to the 70s.

In the video, Yoon Hyun-sook recalled the difficult time, saying, "When I was diagnosed with diabetes in the U.S., my weight had dropped to 38kg, so I went to the hospital and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I thought my life was over there." She added, "I lived a regular life, didn’t eat sweets, and exercised, but I was still told I had diabetes. But what can you do about something congenital? Since I have to live with it for life, I’m going to try to manage it well," showing a positive attitude. Later, Yoon Hyun-sook released a new video titled 'Diabetes, Let’s Go on a Trip, Sister!' introducing travel tips and essential items for people with diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes occurs when some or all of the insulin-producing cells (beta cells) in the pancreas are destroyed. Therefore, until treatment is received, patients have little or no insulin in their bodies and must inject insulin to manage their blood sugar. Because type 1 diabetes requires insulin for treatment, it is also called 'insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.' Additionally, since insulin-producing cells are attacked by autoimmune cells, i.e., white blood cells, it is classified as an autoimmune disease.

Yoon Hyun-sook debuted in 1993 as a member of the co-ed group ZAM (Jaem), gaining popularity with the hit song "I Won't Stop" from their first album. Since her appearance on MBC's 'King of Mask Singer' in 2021, she has not been active in broadcasting and currently resides in Los Angeles, USA, where she shares updates through her YouTube channel and Instagram.
